MERTHYR RFC 32 Blackwood 25
Merthyr ended the season on a high note with a 32-25 victory over much
improved Blackwood. This means that the Ironmen have won 9 of their last
11 games and sets them up as potential promotion challengers for next
season. The first half was strangely subdued with the Ironmen dominating
possession and territory but failing to capitalize on their chances. Blackwood
looked very dangerous in the loose and their back division threatened
on the counter attack. It was on thirty minutes that Blackwood scored.
A dreadful defensive error allowed them in and centre Luke Knight raced
over for a good opportunist try. Only moments later they increased their
lead when a slip pass from ex Merthyr hooker Huw Jones sent left wing
David James racing right through the middle to score under the posts,
Jeremy Lloyd converted and the Ironmen were 12-0 down. When Lloyd slotted
a penalty Merthyr were down 15-0 and in serious trouble. Just on the stroke
of half time a fine individual effort from Ryan Harries gained the Ironmen
five vital points and made the half time score 5-15.
Merthyr looked much more composed in the second half and playing more
through their massive pack they began to turn the screw. A good burst
from Gareth Williams set up the position for a catch and drive and Ross
Coombes burst over. Neil Burnett converted. A carbon copy of this move
produced the same result but Rhys Miles was the scorer this time. Neil
Burnett again converting Merthyr led for the first time but this was short
lived, a burst by David James saw him score his second try for the visitors
and Jeremy Lloyd converted. Merthyr were determined to end the season
in style however and Neil Burnett slotted a penalty to level the scores
only for Lloyd to once more give Blackwood the lead with a well struck
penalty kick. Merthyr were desperate at this stage and huge scrum pressure
was rewarded when the referee gave them a penalty try, Neil Burnett converted
and then slotted a penalty to make the game safe even though there was
a tense five minute spell to play out.
This was another fine win for the impressive Ironmen and augurs well
for the future. The team performance was excellent and with a number of
fine individual showings, notably from Rhys Miles, Gareth Williams and
Ross Coombes. A great line out show from Darren Lynch and Bob Mordacai
and a superb front row effort from Lloyd Wood, Mike Wilson and the hugely
impressive John Difford, the only player to play in every game this season.
Behind the scrum, Simon Parry and Ryan Harries were sharp and Neil Burnett
produced yet another immaculate kicking display

Llangennech 28 MERTHYR RFC 34
This was another impressive Merthyr performance and marked the last game
in Merthyr colours for outstanding centre Thomas James. Thomas is an exceptional
talent and everyone at the club wishes him well when he joins the Cardiff
Blues next season. As a mark of respect and as a mark of his popularity
Thomas led the Ironmen in Llangennech and the win was well deserved and
hard fought. Merthyr dominated the early exchanges down West and Neil
Bennett gave the Ironmen the lead with a well struck penalty after 10
minutes. Merthyr were playing some sparkling rugby and with forwards and
backs combining they looked dangerous. When their first try came it came
from the traditional power pack, from a catch and drive Ross Coombes dived
over, Neil Burnett hitting the posts with the conversion attempt. Another
catch and drive set up the try for prop Rhys James and Merthyr led 13-0.Llangennech
are however a very useful side and dangerous No 8 Ryan Thomas raced over
for a try for the home side, Mark Jones slotted the conversion. As half
time approached Llan cut the Merthyr lead with a penalty from Mark Jones
and the half ended with Merthyr holding a three point lead at 10-13.
Merthyr then went up a gear and a Neil Burnett half break saw him slip
the ball inside and Thomas James raced over, Neil Burnett converted. Llangennech
however still were very much in the hunt and Mark Jones kicked a 35 metre
penalty. Merthyr regained their composure and another catch and drive
saw leading try scorer Jason Price burst over, Neil Burnett converting
from wide out. Merthyr looked to have sealed their victory when Ryan Harries
took a quick tap penalty and shot over from close range, Neil Burnett
again converting. If Merthyr thought it was job done Llangennech had other
ideas. They raced away from in their own half and centre Jason Lewis crossed
for a try. This was quickly followed by a try from left wing Mike Jacobs
who beat two men down the touchline. Mark Jones converted and then kicked
a penalty to make the final few minutes tense. But the Ironmen hung on
for a good win.
In an entertaining game the Merthyr pack were just too strong and with
the tremendous kicking from Neil Burnett they dominated right up until
the last ten minutes. For Merthyr Jason Price, Ross Coombes and Rhys Miles
were a potent back row while in the backs Thomas James was sheer class
and co centre Simon Parry was impressive.

MERTHYR RFC 28 Cwmllynfell 24
This was a quite outstanding game of rugby between two very good First
Division sides. It was of a high standard with few mistakes and the Ironmen
held out to record a 28-24 victory over the visitors. A forward catch
and drive was extremely impressive as Cwmllynfell were driven back twenty
metres for Darren Lynch to get the touchdown. Neil Burnett converting.
Merthyr were being forced into desperate defence and from the resulting
penalties Full Back Peter Thomas kicked three to give his side a 9-7 lead.
Merthyr got the next score when a ball bounced loose wide out and Steven
Cline raced along the touchline to get the try, Neil Burnett converted.
Merthyr were still being forced to infringe and Jason Price was yellow
carded for killing the ball and Peter Thomas sloted the resultant penalty.
Five minutes before half time Thomas James produced a piece of magic receiving
the ball forty metres out nothing looked on but he just took off and brushed
aside desperate tacklers to cross under the posts, Neil Burnett converted
and Merthyr led 21-12.
The second half started with a bang both sides having players yellow carded
Merthyr's Mike Wilson and Cwm's Jim Morgan. Simon Parry and Thomas James
combined well to set up a position near the visitors line and from a scrum
Jason Price got the touchdown. This gave Merthyr a 28-12 lead and the
game seemed over. There had been very few injuries in the second half
and the home crowd were expecting the final whistle when Cwm broke away,
winger Andrew Luther racing over, and Peter Thomas slotting the conversion.
Cwm were not finished yet and got another try moments later through their
hard grafting centre Kevin Jones. This closed the gap to 28-24 and when
the final whistle went the referee had actually played 13 minutes extra
time. Although it was a fabulous game of rugby the Merthyr supporters
didn't really appreciate the additional time. In a great team showing,
Neil Burnett and Thomas James were the pick of the backs and Ross Coombes,
Jason Price and Darren Lynch were outstanding up front.

Builth Wells 8 MERTHYR RFC 33
This was another highly impressive performance as the Bulls
had been on a run of good results of late and Merthyr were expecting a
very hard game. As it turned out both sides were even until mid way through
the first half when the Merthyr pack ground down the home eight to take
command of the game.
Builth opened the scoring when Merthyr went off side at a ruck and Robert
Lloyd kicked the penalty. Merthyr however hit back when Simon Parry cut
back inside and brushed off would be tacklers to score, Neil Burnett converted.
The Bulls were looking dangerous in attack and a very good run down the
left hand touchline ended with Full Back Shaun Huges geting the touchdown.
Merthyr were a little unlucky when dynamic Hooker Robert Evans broke away
through the mid field but Builth just held out. As the half wore on the
Merthyr eight were exerting all sorts of pressure and from a catch and
drive Jason Price powered over. Neil Burnett slotted the conversion and
Merthyr led 14-8.
The Merthyr pack were now very much holding their opponents in a stranglehold
and a series of drives near the Builth line culminated with Scrum Half
Ryan Harries crossing for a good try. Neil Burnett hit the post with the
conversion attempt. At this stage in the game Neil Burnett was bossing
the game and his line kicks caused all sorts of problems for the home
side. A burst and a chip ahead from Full Back Rob Downes was caught by
the ever impressive Thomas James and he raced over for a try, Burnett
converting. As the game drew to an end Jason Price got his second try
when he drove over with a group of supporting forwards. Burnett converted
and the Bulls had been well beaten 33-8. This was a huge team effort and
Merthyr are finishing the season very strongly. In a fabulous performance
Darren Lynch was just man of the match but he was closely challenged by
Neil Burnett, Thomas James, Simon Parry and Robert Evans. Merthyr could
make a very serious challenge for promotion next season on this showing.

MERTHYR RFC 80 Caerphilly 15
This really was an exceptional performance from a rampant Ironmen. A
young and game Caerphilly side were smashed going down 80-15. It was the
visitors who took the lead with a well struck penalty from Out Half Mark
McGreal on two minutes but Merthyr responded with a fabulous try from
Thomas James who raced fully 60 metres beating 5 desperate defenders on
his way. Neil Burnett slotted the conversion and it was a taste of things
to come. Merthyr increased their lead when dynamic hooker Robert Evans
crashed over folowing a catch and drive, Burnett converted. Caerphilly
however at this stage still loked dangerous and when their Scrum Half
broke away he handed on to ex Ironman Craig Marshman who scored, McGreal
converting. Neil Burnett then slotted a penalty before Simon Parry showed
his strength crashing over, Burnett again converting as the first half
was drawing to an end Steven Kline burst down the right hand touchline
and scored wide out , this proved no problem for Neil Burnett who kicked
the conversion to make the half time score 31-10.
Merthyr were now playing down the slope and having use of the wind, Caerphilly
must have been concerned as to how they could contain the Ironmen and
the task proved to be impossible. Ross Coombes burst over for a try ,
Burnett converting. Then a forty metre forward drive saw Jason Price crossing,
Burnett converting. Merthyr tries were now coming at a rate of knots and
Ross Coombes got his second from a scrum drive before tries came from
a dancing Neil Burnett and a speedy Rob Downes, Ross Coombes got his third
from a scrum drive and Thomas James his second from a superb burst. Naturally
the faultless Neil Burnett converted them all and Merthyr led by a massive
80-10. Caerphilly got a deserved consolation try from winger Chris Thomas
but the game ended with Merthyr on the attack and victors by 80-15.
This was a massive Merthyr showing and a great team performance. Up front
Robert Evans had an outstanding game while Darren Lynch ruled the line
outs and the Merthyr scrum with Mike Wilson and John Difford enjoying
themselves were always on top, In the backs Thomas James looks awesome
and Simon Parry and Ryan Harries had huge games.Rob Downes always looked
dangerous as did Steven Kline. The Merthyr man of the match however must
be Neil Burnett who produced a flawless display of kicking.

MERTHYR RFC 24 Ystrad Rhondda14
This really was a strange game and Merthyr won it with a
little to spare, they did however play second fiddle for much of the game
and Ystrad's running of the ball won them many friends. The first half
was dominated by the visitors and Merthyr only rarely ventured into their
half. Ystrad took the lead when full back Dylan Jones slotted a penalty.
They doubled the lead with his second after 15 minutes. Ystrad were playing
fast open rugby and Merthyr found it difficult to get into the game. One
fabulous tackle from Thomas James cut down Ystrad's right wing when a
try looked certain but Ystrad continued to attack and it was full back
Dylan Jones who crossed for a try on 30 minutes after some speedy handling
by the visiting three quarters. Merthyr suddenly woke from their slumber
and a good catch and drive saw Jason Price crash over for a try. They
further closed the gap when captain Rob Downes raced over after handing
off a desperate defender. Before the half ended Thomas James produced
another outstanding tackle to prevent another try.
Merthyr played through their powerful forwards in the second half and
Jason Price got his second try from a scrum drive, Neil Burnett converted
and Merthyr led 17-11. Dylan Jones made things uncomfortable for them
when he slotted another penalty to cut the gap to only 3 points. However
from the kick off Ystrad threw the ball out and an alert Neil Burnett
intercepted gratefully and darted over under the posts. He kicked the
simple conversion and the Ironmen were home and dry. Although the win
was hard earned Merthyr were a little disappointing. Good ball was kicked
away too much and the dynamic defender Thomas James never got a chance
to show off his attacking skills. Up front Merthyr dominated and Darren
Lynch and Gareth Williams had big games. Behind the scrum Richard Jones
and Ryan Harries impressed as footballing scrum halves but the man of
the match award must go to Thomas James who tackled everything that moved.

MERTHYR RFC 45 UWIC 14
Merthyr enjoyed their Easter Saturday match defeating UWIC
and scoring 45 points in the process. They began well and after a series
of scrums on the visitors line the ref lost patience and awarded Merthyr
a penalty try, Burnett slotting the conversion. UWIC as always looked
to move the ball at every opportunity and when a Merthyr kick went astray
the students raced away and almost scored. Merthyr however were playing
with great determination and their second try was soon to come. It came
after a series of forward pick up and drives and it was scored by Captain
Bob Mordecai, the ref ruling that the conversion of Neil Burnett went
wide when the Merthyr crowd were more than convinced that it was over.
As half time approached Merthyr looked to have a stranglehold on the game
and the home defence was quite outstanding with centres Simon Parry and
Thomas James at the forefront.
Merthyr started the second half with a band and a Neil Burnett burst was
carried on by Thomas James who crossed for the try, Neil Burnett converted
and Merthyr led 19-0. Merthyr then produced perhaps their best move of
the match and some strong running down the left hand touchline featured
Steven Kline, Thomas James and Rob Downes before Simon Parry dived over.
Neil Burnett slotted the conversion. UWIC had not thrown in the towel
and received some reward for their effort when Flanker Steffan Taricska
crossed after a 60 metre movement. Tom Hancox kicked the conversion. Merthyr
immediately hit back when substitute Scrum Half Ryan Harries showed his
class racing over and popular prop John Difford received a great cheer
when he dived over for a try that Neil Burnett converted. UWIC kept running
and Matt McClean darted over following a burst down the left hand touchline,
Hancox converted from wide out. Merthyr however deservedly had the last
say when hard grafting centre Simon Parry danced over for his second try,
Burnett converted and the Ironmen ended up 45-14 victors.
In an excellent team showing new scrum half Richard Jones looked very
impressive as did Simon Parry and Thomas James. Up front Gareth Davies
tackled everything that moved and John Difford . Bob Mordacai and Darren
Lynch looked sharp. Ross Coombes got over the gain line all day and the
team defended as a unit. It would be difficult to select a man of the
match but both centres Simon Parry and Thomas James should be worthy of
consideration as would Neil Burnett for his accurate kicking.

Newbridge 23 MERTHYR RFC 12
The Ironmen visited the Welfare Ground last Saturday for their Division
One clash against second placed Newbridge. Having taken the honours at
the Wern earlier in the season Peter Morgan and his team had great hopes
of pulling off another double over the side now managed by that old Merthyr
favorite Dai Roberts. In a battle of two of the best packs in the Division
the contest was not going to be fast and flowing or for those connoisseurs
of open rugby and a tight game ensued dominated by the boots of Merthyr
fullback Neil Burnett and Newbridge fullback Gethin Paterson and outside
half Greg Jones. From a forward drive by the home back Greg Jones opened
the scoring for the home side to lead 3-0 after 9 minutes and Neil Burnett
having missed one chance equalled the scoring from the 10 metre line after
22 minutes.
The Ironmen tried in vain to pierce the resolute defence with some good
breaks from both Thomas James and Simon Parry but dropped passes at crucial
times brought some promising moves to an end. However one of these moves
resulted in a penalty for the visitors and allowed Neil Burnett to put
the Ironmen up 3-6 after half an hour. Newbridge then spurned the chance
to equalize by going for territory soon after but two phases later the
Ironmen conceded a penalty beneath their posts which forced the home side
to take the points and draw level. Just on half time Neil Burnett kicked
another penalty to put the Ironmen up 6-9 at half time and bolstered by
the strengthening wind all bode well for the second half.
The Ironmen started brightly and went further ahead with another penalty
from Neil Burnett only to concede a try from Chris James who seised the
ball from the edge of a ruck 22 metres out and race under the posts. The
resulting conversion from Greg Jones saw Newbridge retake the lead which
they would not surrender. Jason Price found himself sin binned for an
off side offence at a ruck and the resulting penalty was goaled by Greg
Jones to put his side 16-12 up.
The final nail for the Ironmen was a try also goaled by Jones from Number
8 Colin Bridges. Fine performances came from Darren Lynch and Gareth Williams
in the second row and Richard Jones on permit from Rhymney showed some
skills which could blend with the Ironmen's strengths. A disappointed
Ironmen must pick themselves up for the visiting students from UWIC at
home at the Wern this Saturday following successive defeats from the teams
currently at Number 1 and 2 in the league

Bonymaen 38 MERTHYR RFC 17
Merthyr went down 38-17 when they visited league leaders Bonymaen on
Saturday last. The score line however was not a true reflection on their
efforts and with only ten minutes or so to go Merthyr were very much still
in the game at 19-17 down. Merthyr were missing a few key players but
still put in a sterling performance and made a classy home side graft
hard for their victory. Bonymaen showed their true class and played an
attractive running game throughout to show just why they lead the division.
They started well and took the lead with a well struck penalty from Gareth
James after only three minutes, Merthyr hit back and leveled with a similar
penalty from Neil Burnett. The Ironmen then took the lead when Craig Lynch
took a good line out ball the pack drove over and brother Darren emerged
with the ball and a try. When Burnett converted Merthyr led 10-3. Simon
Parry almost burst away but was just held and when the home side attacked
Merthyr gifted an easy penalty and three points to Gareth James. Merthyr
were finding the sheer pace of the game a little uncomfortable and centre
Neil Wilcox crossed half way out following a swift bout of handling by
the home backs. Just on half time Gareth James slotted another penalty
and the home side ended the half leading 14-10.
The second half saw Merthyr having the use of the wind but Bonymaen
struck almost immediately pacy winger Lyndon Johnson racing over. Merthyr
threw everything into attack and they believed they should have been awarded
a penalty try when a boot kicked the ball out of a driving scrum on the
home line. They pinned Bonymaen there for some five minutes and were eventually
rewarded when Jason Price crossed following a driving maul, Neil Burnett
converted and the gap was cut to 19-17. In the driving maul that earned
the try the home side had a player yellow carded and Merthyr looked to
be getting on top. Bonymaen don't surrender however and they just went
up a gear and produced some fabulous rugby. Lyndon Johnson got his second
try following some pacy three quarter work, James converting as the game
drew to a close the home threes raced away again and this time it was
full back Darril Williams who crossed James converted and the victory
was earned with a little to spare.
Merthyr competed well for 70 minutes and threatened the league leaders
but the home side were just too pacy and skillful in the closing minutes.
For Merthyr the whole pack gave their all with Jason Price quite outstanding.
He was well supported in the back row by Gareth Davies and Ross Coombes.
Locks Darren and Craig Lynch dominated the line outs and both had fine
games. Behind the scrum Merthyr found the going hard but Dai Cambourne
tried hard to inspire and Neil Burnett kicked well and centers Thomas
James and Simon Parry defended well. Merthyr now face Newbridge away on
Saturday next, another very difficult encounter.

MERTHYR RFC 27 Narberth 10
This was a very impressive victory for the Ironmen as they put Narberth
to the sword in dreadful conditions on the Wern. The atrocious conditions
meant that the game was always going to be fought out up front. This suited
Merthyr down to the ground and a first minute try after a catch and drive
of some thirty minutes set the foundation for the game. The try came from
hooker Lloyd Wood and the exact same formula was used 7 minutes later
the only diference was that flanker Gareth Williams got the touchdown.
The Narberth scrum was in all sorts of trouble as Lloyd Wood, John Difford
and Mike Wilson turned the screw but against the run of play the visitors
showed how dangerous they were on the break and some swift handling saw
Scrum Half Andrew Davies cross in the right hand corner. This only served
to sting Merthyr into a reaction and Out Half Neil Burnett intercepted
just short of the visitors line locked to knock on but just managed to
catch the ball as he dived over for the try that he also converted. Merthyr
ended the half with a fine try from Ross Coombes after yet another unstoppable
catch and drive.
The second half saw the visitors throw everything into attack and Merthyr
were pinned deep inside their own half for some twenty minutes. The defence
of the Ironmen however was rock solid with Flanker Gareth Davies making
a number of big tackles. In a rare visit into the Narberth half Merthyr
once more drove from a line out and sub Jason Price emerged as the scorer.
Narberth got a consolation try from winger Josh Freeman after a chip through
but it was too little too late. Merthyr centre Thomas James almost scored
in the dying minutes but his kick ahead went over the dead ball line.
For some strange reason the Referee played 6 minutes of injury time but
it mattered little as Merthyr ran out comfortable winners.
In a fine Merthyr showing any one of the pack could have got man of the
match award but perhaps the tackling of Gareth Davies would make him the
choice. Behind the scrum the dreadful conditions meant that opportunities
to run were few and far between. Simon Parry however looked very sharp
and Merthyr need to look for ways to capitalise on the pace and strength
of young Thomas James. His potential is absolutely vast and he needs to
feature more behind. The Merthyr pack were superb with Bob Mordecai and
Darren Lynch dominating the line out and they will be confident going
into two very tricky away games against Bonymaen and Newbridge, first
and second in the Division.

17th March 2006 Fleur De Lys 21 MERTHYR RFC 29
In bitterly cold conditions Merthyr worked hard to overcome the chalenge
of Fleur De Lys ending up winners by 29-21. Merthyr playing with a howling,
biting gale in their favour strangly decided not to operate a first half
kicking game and this resulted in a very tight half and could so easily
have cost the Ironmen the game. Neil Burnett began well and slotted a
2nd minute penalty. Merthyr rapidly increased their lead when, dynamic
flanker Gareth Davies intercepted and sprinted 35 metres to cross. Fleur
were hanging on however and when full back Nathan Gittins slotted a penalty
the Merthyr lead was only 5 points. Merthyr got the next score when strong
running centre Simon Parry jinked over for a fine solo effort and Neil
Burnett converted. As the half drew to a close Fleur made things uncomfortable
for the Ironmen and Gittins slotted two penalties to make the half time
score 9-15. With the howling wind now in their favour, Fleur De Lys were
looking forward to the second half.
The second half saw the Ironmen dig deep and Rhys Miles powered his way
over for a try which Neil Burnett converted. The game was far from over
however and with Fleur making much better use of the wind than did Merthyr
in the first half a kick through was pounced upon by Mathew Davies who
scored wide out. Most of the game was now being fought out in the middle
of the pitch but when Merthyr attacked they were rewarded with a try from
Ross Coombes which Burnett converted. In the dying moments Fleur De Lys
got a consolation try when hard working No 8 Matthew Lawrence crossed
from a quickly taken tap penalty, Gittins converted and the game ended
with Merthyr gaining the spoils.
The weather conditions were quite dreadful with a freezing, howling wind
blowing down the pitch. This made good rugby difficult but both sides
tried hard to entertain. For Merthyr, Dai Cambourne at Scrum Half had
a big game as did Ross Coombes and Darren Lynch. Neil Burnett was a steadying
influence and his kicking was first class.

Blackwood 30 MERTHYR RFC 17
The long lay off had taken its tole as the Ironmen took an age to get
into their stride at Blackwood in a Friday night game. All the early pressure
came from the home side and it came as no surprise when Ex Merthyr Out
Half Jeremy Lloyd slotted a penalty to give Blackwood a 3-0 lead. The
game had been somewhat flat but it came to life in a strange way, a bout
of fisticuffs between locks Bob Mordacae and Simon Jones saw both red
carded when a yellow may well have been the better option. This disrupted
both sides but Blackwood seemed to regain their composure the better and
when their inside centre broke through he sent David James racing over
near the posts, Jeremy Lloyd converted. From a home line out the home
eight drove Merthyr over their own line and Andrew Coupe scored, Lloyd
converted and Merthyr were 17-0 down and looked disinterested. They then
produced a similar catch and drive and Jason Price drove over to get the
Ironmen on the board as the half ended 17-5 in favour of the home side.
The second half saw Blackwood increase their lead with another Lloyd penalty,
this they extended with a try from Jason Rogers and Merthyr looked down
and out. Merthyr then began to play and particularly young centre Thomas
James. He burst away and made a try for Dale Keepin before making another
for Neil Burnett , Burnett converting and the Ironmen were suddenly back
in the game at 25-17. However just when there seemed a chance of a come
back man of the match Blackwood's captain and Scrum Half burst away down
the left hand touchline, he slipped a pass inside and Gavin Rees crossed
to make the final score 30-17.
This really was a very disappointing showing from the Ironmen and coaches
Mark Pugh and Martin Burridge will want a big improvement from them when
they visit Fleur de Lys on Friday next. In the poor showing Thomas James
looked sharp but had little ball and Jason Price grafted hard all night.

MERTHYR RFC 41 Whitland 42
This was a fabulous game of rugby that had the crowd enthralled until
the final whistle. Merthyr dominated the first half producing their best
rugby of the season and possibly the best rugby ever seen at the Wern.
Indeed the crowd gave tham a standing ovation as they left the field at
half time.
Unfortunately for the Ironmen Whitland hadn't read the script and perhaps
lulled into a false sense of security Merthyr just took their foot off
the gas, but what a game.
The Ironmen took the lead after 2 minutes Thomas James stepping inside
and darting over Burnett converting. Whitland hit back with a penalty
from Out Half Aled Davies but the Ironmen got their second try when Matthew
Pizey raced over following a quick tap penalty from Ryan Harries, Burnett
slotting the conversion.Merthyr gifted Whitland another penalty and Aled
Davies closed the gap with the three points. This however seemed to matter
little as Simon Parry burst through the mid field and Thomas James raced
over, Burnett agan converting. When Darren Lynch won good line out ball
Jason Price drove over for a try and on half time Robert Downes raced
over after Thomas James had weaved some magic, Neil Burnett kicked the
conversion and Merthyr turned around 33-6 leaders.
Whitland stayed on the field at half time and one could sense their resolve
as the second half kicked off. Dion Thomas got an early try for them Davies
slotted the conversion, then sub Alun Harris darted away to score and
Davies again kicked the additional two points. From a forward drive Ricky
Davies crossed and Merthyr looked suddenly more than vulnerable. However
flanker Gareth Davies dived over for the Ironmen to give them a 38-25
lead.
Whitland were however more determined than ever that man sub Harris got
his second try when he brushed off some weak Merthyr tackling down the
left hand touchline. These missed tackles were soon to haunt the Ironmen
as Alun Harris got his third try only moments later. Neil Burnett slotted
a penalty but it only extended the lead to 6 points a try and a conversion
would prove fatal and in the final minute of extra time this is exactly
what happened when centre Alun John knocked off a defender to score under
the posts.Davies naturally kicked the conversion and Merthyr had snatched
defeat from the jaws of victory.
This really was a special game of rugby Whitland are an exceptional side
but so to now are the Ironmen. The standard of rugby played is extremely
high indeed and the Ironmen deserve the support of the town.
There were huge displays from both xvs but for Merthyr Thomas James and
Gareth Davies were the pick. What a fantastic game of rugby.

Waunarlwydd 5 MERTHYR RFC 42
This really was an exceptional performance from the Ironmen and got the
show back on the road after their narrow defeat against Beddau of the
previous week. The win moves the Ironmen into third place in the league
and demonstrated just how the side is rapidly improving and playing some
outstanding rugby. Merthyr attacked from thestart and a powerful run from
Ross Coombes set up a position that allowed Neil Burnett to dance his
way over untouched near the posts with some neat footwork, Neil slotted
the penalty and the Ironmen announced their intention. The second Merthyr
try came from a more traditional forward drive, Bob Mordacai taking clean
line out ball and the Ironmen driving Waun back. Ross Coombes getting
the try and Neil Burnett kicking the conversion. The next try came from
the outstanding young centre Thomas James. Jason Price set him up some
40 metres out but James looked to be well covered. He skipped out of three
tackles all of which seemed to have him well covered and burst away racing
over to the cheers of the Merthyr supporters. Burnett converted and at
half time Merthyr led 21-0.
The second half began the way the first ended, that man Thomas James raced
away from some 60 metres out, he beat four desperate defenders as if they
didn't exist and sprinted awa for the try, again Neil Burnett converted.
Waunarlwydd were competing well and it was only the superb Merthyr defence
that repelled drive after drive on the Merthyr line. In this heroic effort
Gareth Davis and Robert Evans were prominent. When Merthyr did break away
Neil Burnett kicked long across field the ball fortunately bounced up
into Dale Keepins hands and he showed a fine burst of speed to race 40
metres to score, Neil Burnett again converting. The final Merthyr score
came from fellow winger Matthew Pizey after he intercepted and raced 50
metresto cross near the posts. Burnett slotted the kick with ease and
Merthyr were home and dry. Waun got a late consolation try when their
captain Michael Harris darted over in the final minute but Merthyr had
won well with something to spare.
This Merthyr side are now a potent force, the powerful forwards have existed
all season, indeed for a number of seasons but the Ironmen now supplement
this strength with a very pacy and creative back division. In Thomas James
they have a huge talent and in Ryan Harries, Dale Keepins and Matthew
Pizey they have tricky, dangerous attackers. The game featured the debut
of Steven Richards at Full Back and it also saw Neil Burnett, one of the
most talented kickers in Welsh rugby exceed 200 points in the league this
season. The choice of man of the match for Merthyr would be impossible
, with the whole 22 deserving of praise but one of Gareth Davies, Thomas
James, John Difford or Ross Coombes would be more than worthy of the accolade.
The Ironmen at present are producing some quite incredible rugby and scoring
some fantastic tries. They are well worth the support of the town. Come
on the Ironmen!

MERTHYR RFC 15 Beddau 20
Merthyr's run of 6 of six league wins came to a disappointing end on
the Wern where Beddau just about deserved their 20-15 victory in a close
fought encounter. Beddau exerted the early pressure but when the first
score came it came to Merthyr against the run of play and in spectacular
style. Centre Thomas James was given the ball 50 metres out he dummied
and swerved outside his man , shot off at trememdous pace and stepped
inside the cover to score near the posts, Neil Burnett converting.
Beddau however were matching Merthyr up front and looked extremely dangerous
behind. They got their first try when a a Merthyr scrum was disrupted
near the home line and the scrappy ball was moved left where centre Rhys
Jenkins burst over winger Steve Robinson converting and Robinson made
the half time score 10-7 to the visitors with a well struck penalty.
Merthyr were playing down the slope in the second half but although their
driving maul was causing concern, the visitors were powerful enough to
cope with it. Beddau increased their lead with a good try from Prop Ashley
Copic in the left hand corner. Merthyr however hit back with a try of
their own, Dale Keepin dancing over after a burst from debutant centre
Alun Jenkins. Merthyr then had the best chance of the match when a scrambled
kick across their own line from Beddau bounced in to a Merthyr attackers
hands just short of the line only for the ball to be knocked on. Beddau
cleared their line with a long kick downfield and Merthyr had to conceede
the touch just short of their line. Beddau however didn't let them off
the hook and a quick throw saw opportunist centre Daniel Palk cross for
the deciding score. Merthyr threw everything into attack and when Dale
Keepins chipped ahead and was taken out, Beddau saw their Out Half Nathan
Walters yellow carded. Neil Burnett reduced the Beddau lead with a god
penalty but the Ironmen just couldn't get the vital try and Beddau had
earned their hard fought victory.
This was a disappointing result for the Ironmen. They were matched up
front for long periods and even when they began to get on top in that
area Beddau were rock solid in defence. In the pack Darren Lynch and Gareth
Williams had big games and centre Thomas James scored a spectacular try
but unfortunately then saw little of the ball. Beddau were just a little
more creative and were slightly quicker of thought.

Newport 22 MERTHYR RFC 8
This match really was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Merthyr
had as much possession, and perhaps more territory than their Premiership
rivals. Time and again they were camped on the Newport line but some excellent
defence and too much indiscipline allowed Newport the spoils. It was however
an outstanding team performance and the whole squad played and did themselves
proud. The Ironmen are now a powerful team their pack has been superb
for sometime and in Ross Coombes they had one of the game's outstanding
ball carriers but the Ironmen have now developed a potent backline and
have two quite exceptional young talents in Scrum Half Ryan Harries and
Centre Thomas James, who looked the outstanding player on the park.
Newport took the lead with a well struck penalty from Out Half Dan Griffiths.
Merthyr replied with a series of powerful forward drives and strong scrums
that had the Gwent side on the back foot and defending desperately to
hold out the Ironmen. Ryan Harries produced two dynamic runs from quickly
taken tap penalties as Merthyr refused the easy penalties and when a ball
went loose in the mid field Thomas James picked up and sprinted away only
to be held up just short of the line. In a rare Newport attack Merthyr
went offside and Dan Griffiths methodically sloted the penalty and added
a third when Jason Price was yellow carded after a bout of fisticuffs
erupted in mid field. Griffiths was running the game for Newport and he
made the score 12-0 with another penalty. Merthyr were still in the hunt
however and another run from Thomas James caused panic in the home defence.
The half ended with Merthyr 12-0 down. The Ironmen started the second
half with a bang, a chip ahead was caught on the bounce by Dale Keepins
and he crosed for a fine try. But when Newport got into the Merthyr half
another penalty gifted then three points.
Merthyr attacked through their pack where Ross Coombes was exceptional
and Newport went offside, Neil Burnett slotted the penalty and closed
the gap to 15-8. Newport then produced their best move of the match and
centre Ashley Smith crossed for a good try which, that man Dan Griffiths
converted, Merthyr were frustrated when Dale Keepins was yelow carded
for remonstrating with the Ref following this score. Merthyr however refused
to give up and Dai Cambourne and Thomas James both produced good runs
before the final whistle.
This really was a sterling performance and a group of Newport supporters
leaving the ground said Merthyr could have won with just a little more
discipline. The Ironmen are a real force at present and they did the town
proud in this match. In a great team performance Darren Lynch, Ross Coombes
and Gareth Williams were the pick up front while in the Threes, Ryan Harries,
Dale Keepins and Thomas James had big games.

Llanharan 11 MERTHYR RFC 30
Merthyr maintained their recent run of excellent form making it six victories
on the trot with a convincing 30-11 win at the Dairy Field. The Ironmen
started slowly and it was the home side who dominated he first quarter.
Despite that the Ironmen opened the scoring when a rare attack set up
a penalty slotted by Neil Burnett. Straight from the kick off holding
on, on the ground gifted Llanharan a penalty that Les Jones converted
and the scores were level. Merthyr at this stage were very much on the
back foot and it came as no real surprise when the home side took the
lead with a well worked try down the right touchline , winger Carl Jones
crossing. Burnett as usual on superb kicking form slotted another penalty
to keep Merthyr in the hunt at 8-6. Merthyr produced the best move of
the match next whem young centre Thomas James raced away chipped ahead
and caught the ball on the bounce only to be pulled down just short of
the line. As half time approached Merthyr suddenly went up a gear and
when the home side had their hooker yellow carded , that man Neil Burnett
slotted a penalty to give the Ironmen the lead. Just on half time Jason
Price entered the fray after hard grafting flanker Gareth Davies left
the field following an injury. The abrasiveness of Jas Priced seemed to
inspire the Merthyr eight and suddenly the Ironmen took control up front.
As the half ended Rhys Miles produced a tremendous burst racing down the
left touchline and this was a taste of things to come.
The second half now saw Merthyr playing down the slope and they immediately
took command a forward drive caused major problems for Llanharan and when
the ball was moved right Neil Burnett darted over to score a try that
he also converted. Merthyr now led 16-8 but were shocked when centre Thomas
James was yellow carded . Llanharan closed the gap when Greg Jones kicked
the penalty that followed but the Ironmen by now were exerting tremendous
pressure on the home side with a series of powerful forward drives and
power scrums. From one such drive hard grafting hooker Lloyd Wood got
a well deserved try converted by Burnett and the game ended with Darren
Lynch making a fabulous line out take and the forwards once more drove
over the line where Rhys Miles got the touchdown, naturally Neil Burnett
converted and Merthyr had made it six wins on the run and given themselves
a confidence boost for next week's cup game at Rodney Parade against Premier
Outfit Newport.
In a fine team showing Ross Coombes had a superb game up front as did
Jason Price, Lloyd Wood and Darren Lynch. In the backs Thomas James looks
a tremendous talent and Neil Burnett must have been Merthyr's man of the
match.

MERTHYR RFC 20 Builth Wells17
The Merry Christmas earned by the Ironmen against Builth was extremely
hard fought and perhaps a little fortunate. Merthyr struggled to get going
and too many of the XV seemed to be concentrating on thoughts of last
minute presents and the festive spirit as mistakes were all too often
and the attitude throughout the first half lacked much. Merthyr began
well enough and a forward drive set up some quick ball and as it was moved
right Rob Downes raced over for a simple try. The Merthyr supporters seemed
confident but the side were extremely subdued and Builth came more and
more into the game to dominate the half. From a five metre scrum simple
and rapid passing saw Dewi Jones race over to level the scores. Builth
then went ahead, Scrum Half Sam Cornfield showing the ball and slipping
the ball to centre Fred Hughes, John Thurston converted and Builth led
12-5. If one thought things couldn't get much worse, they did. Lock Bob
Mordacai was yellow carded following an incident at a ruck and hen Builth
extended their lead when slick handling saw George Jenkins race over wide
out to make the score 5-17. Merthyr clawed their way back into the game
with a Neil Burnett penalty but the half ended with Builth very much on
top and looking by far the better side.
The half time team talk did much to improve things for the Ironmen and
after a Rob Downes burst, Ross Coombes picked up and drove over for a
good try. Merthyr had suddenly awoken from their Christmas slumber and
looked more their old selves. The forwards drove forward with more guile
and determination and Rob Downes burst away to score the vital try. Neil
Burnett slotted the conversion and Merthyr were leading 20-17. Their forwards
ensured that they held onto this lead dominating things up front in the
last ten minutes, but Builth still looked dangerous on the break. The
Ironmen hung on to record their forth consecutive victory but they will
be very disappointed with their performance. In a lack lustre Merthyr
showing Rob Downes and Neil Burnett were the pick of the backs. Up front
Jason Price and Ross Coombes had solid games and Lloyd Wood produced a
number of strong runs. Perhaps the Merthyr man of the match would go to
Darren Lynch who dominated the line outs. Merthyr face Ystrad Rhondda
on Saturday next and they will be looking to improve on this showing to
continue their excellent run.

17th December 2005 UWIC 34 MERTHYR RFC 36
It was a cold , crisp winters day at Cyncoed on Saturday when Merthyr
produced one of their best displays of the season to overcome the fleet
footed students of UWIC in perfect playing conditions. The Ironmen began
well and surprised their following by producing a fast free flowing style
of rugby in the opening period. The rugby they produced very much suited
UWIC and Merthyr supporters were concerned. UWIC were first on the score
sheet, Martyn Thomas racing over for a try following a quickly taken tap
penalty.
Merthyr hit back when they reverted to their old style, drove forward
through their impressive pack and slipped the ball out to Neil Burnett
who twisted through a tackle to cross wide out and then slot the difficult
conversion. UWIC were now full of running and Merthyr were not finding
touch from their kicks and this allowed the home backs the freedom to
run back at them. UWIC got their second try after a superb break by scrum
half Lee Williams who showed tremendous pace before sending winger George
Dixon racing over. Merthyr however were very much in the game and hit
back once more when another forward drive saw Ross Coombes cross for a
try, Burnett converted and Merthyr led 14-12.
The game was full of cut and thrust and the students got a cracking try
running down the right hand touchline for Johnny Wehbe to score. As the
half came to a close the students increased their lead with a well struck
penalty from Matt McClean and Merthyr had Mike Wilson sin-binned for illegal
use of the boot. Things looked bleak for the Ironmen and even more so
when UWIC increased their lead with a try from Pat Foreman and a conversion
from McClean. With a gap of 27-14 Merthyr looked to be out of the game
but this Merthyr side is a determined band of players and they refused
to give up. Another rolling maul gained ground and when the ball was slipped
out centre Luke James crossed for a try and Neil Burnett converted. Merthyr
then took the lead with a power scrum that forced UWIC to infringe and
concede a penalty try, Burnett converting. In a fabulous game of rugby
the students recaptured the lead with a try from Alex Jones after a quickly
taken tap penalty and Nicky Robinson converted to give the home side a
34-28 lead.
Merthyr were not finished however and a desperate attack saw prop Mike
Wilson get the vital touchdown and Merthyr were now very much in the game
down just one point at 34-33. The Merthyr forwards drove into the students
half and forced them to go offside. Neil Burnett stepped up on full time
to slot the vital penalty but the game could still have a sting in the
tail as UWIC attacked out of desperation and won themselves a penalty
deep into injury time. Unfortunately for the students the kick went to
the left of the posts and the Ironmen had continued their great run and
gained a tremendous victory.
In a superb team effort it would be impossible to select a man of the
match as everyone gave their all. However the kicking of Neil Burnett
was crucial as was the line out ball won by Gareth Williams and Darren
Lynch. The Ironmen are battling their way up the table and have now moved
into forth place. They have a number of games over the festive period
that could see them make further gains and put some pressure on the leading
clubs.

MERTHYR RFC 18 Newbridge 10
This really was an excellent game of rugby played by two powerful sides.
For Merthyr it was a clear indication of just how they are improving because
they always just had the edge on third place Newbridge and deserved their
victory. The game started with some early Newbridge pressure but Merthyr
held firm and when they attacked through the driving maul Newbridge found
it difficult to cope. It was the driving maul that set up the first try,
but the scorer was not one of the massive Merthyr eight but Scrum Half
Dai Cambourne on 29 minutes. Just on half time the visitors should have
scored when Scrum Half livewire Matthew Taylor looked to be over the line
but he instead of grounding the ball passed to Out Half Greg Jones and
Jones dropped the ball on the try line. The half came to an end with the
Merthyr driving maul shunting the big visiting eight twenty metres.
Merthyr attacked from the start of the second half and an excellent line
out take by the Outstanding Darren Lynch was driven on where Dai Cambourne
somehow drove over for his second try. The Merthyr line out with Darren
Lynch and Gareth Williams was dominating while the Merthyr scrum with
Mike Wilson, John Difford and Lloyd Wood battled hard throughout the game
against a very powerful Newbridge front row. Merthyr lost concentration
for a period of ten minutes early in the second half and suddenly Newbridge
were back in the game. Out Half Greg Jones slotted a good penalty, before
the Out Half darted over for a try which he converted himself. Merthyr
were now under some considerable pressure but they managed to step up
a gear.
Firstly the Merthyr scrum exerted pressure on the Newbridge eight and
forced them to concede a penalty. Neil Burnett kicked it with ease. He
then killed off the game with a fabulous penalty from the touchline after
Full Back Andrew Richards had produced a powerful burst down the touchline.
The game ended with Merthyr on top and the win moves the Ironmen up to
fourth place in Division One.
This was a thouroughly entertaining game of rubgy , hard fought but played
in the right spirit. Both packs were huge and their battle was a close
fought thing but Merthyr shaded it as the game woreon. Gareth Williams
and Rhys Miles had huge games but it was Darren Lynch whose line out play
was superb who was the man of the match. Behind the scrum the Merthyr
threes are beginning to find their form and Rob Downes and Simon Parry
had fine games as did Dale Keepin who looks a tricky runner. It was an
important victory for the Ironmen because the victory was a reflection
of the improvements that this team is now making. With Bob Mordacai soon
to return after a long injury and playing to their strengths this side
are capable of doing very well indeed.

MERTHYR RFC 38 Cilfynydd 15
This really was a very entertaining game and a game in which Cilfynydd
emerged with great credit. Throughout the first half it was the divisionfour
side who played the better rugby and their support play was a joy to watch.
But Merthyr gradually clawed their way into the game and their power and
experience was in the end too much for the game visitors. Cilfynydd opened
the scoring when their Inside Centre broke through the mid field , he
handed on and Right Winger Craig Allen darted over and Out Half Delme
King converted. Merthyr hit back when Ryan Harries raced down the left
touchline and sent Simon Parry racing over for a good try Neil Burnett
converting. Thehalf ended with Cilfynydd taking the lead after a Delme
King penalty.
Merthyr rang the changes in the second half but perhaps the most influential
introduction was that of Jason Price. He produced a number of strong bursts
and the visitors found it difficult to cope with his running. Merthyr
stepped up a gear and after a good run from Simon Parry , Dale Keepin
crossed, this was quickly followed by a well taken try from Captain Rob
Downes, converted by Burnett. The Merthyr scrum suddenly was puttingtremendous
pressure on the Cil pack and Jason Price touched down after a scrum drive,
Burnett converting. Within five minutes this excercise was repeated and
Jason Price got his second try. Cilfynydd had contributed much to the
game and they got a good consolation try when Out Half Delme King raced
over but Merthyr had the final say Owainn Davies catching an attacking
chip forward and darting over, Burnett converted and Merthyr had won by
38-15.
In a very good game of rugby for Merthyr Jason Price had a big game as
did Gareth Williams. In the backs Dale Keepin and Ryan Harries were the
pick with Keeping being Merthyr's outstanding player. For Cilfynydd Flanker
Hugh Wright covered every blade of grass and Delme King and Mark Burton
were excellent halves.

4th November 2005 Caerphilly 33 MERTHYR RFC 29
This was an exciting game and a game in which the result was in doubt
right up to the final whistle. It was however a game that left the Merthyr
faithful frustrated because it was a game the Ironmen should have won
with something to spare. The Merthyr eight were in control for the majority
of the game and they dominated possession. However the Ironmen found it
difficult to use the abundance of possession gained and that coupled with
some woeful tackling gifted the game to Caerphilly.
The game began in bright sunshine and the two Out Halves exchanged penalties.
James Alfrey then slotted a second to give the home side a 6-3 lead and
then ex Merthyr winger Craig Marshman crossed wide out chasing an attacking
kick that bounced kindly for him. A powerful surge from Ross Coombes gained
both ground and a penalty for Merthyr and Neil Burnett surprised everyone
by kicking a huge penalty. Caerphilly increased their lead when some weak
tackling down the touchline and some slight of hand sent Mark Addis racing
away for a try which Alfrey converted. Neil Burnett had the final say
of the first half with two tremendous penalties and Merthyr turned around
18-12 behind. Burnett closed the gap with another penalty before Marshman
broke away again and raced over to give the home side a 23-15 lead. When
Alfrey sloted a penalty Caer had opened a 26-15 lead and Merthyr looked
in trouble. Ross Coombes however clawed them back into the game with a
burst that saw him crossing near the posts, Neil Burnett giving something
of a kicking masterclass slotted the conversion. Merthyr were dominating
up front with the forwards driving forward and Caerphilly hanging on but
it was the home side who scxored next against the run of play their No
8 racing away from a scrum and replacement Huw Jones crossed for the tryAlfrey
converting. Merthyr were now desperate and two delightful chips through
by Neil Burnett put Caerphilly very much on the back foot and debutant
winger Dale Keepins crosed to cap a very good debut. Burnett converted
and the very close game ended 33-29 to Caerphilly.
The great disappointment was that the Ironmen should have won this game.
They made too many errors and allowed Caerphilly to battle for the spoils.
Uncontested line outs gifted the home side vital possession and a number
of weak tackles gifted scores. The Ironmen were tremendous up front and
the hard grafting pack deserved more than to come second. Jason Price
and Gareth Williams were quite outstanding, Gareth Davies also had a big
game as sub and Ross Coombes always got over the gain line. Ryan Harries
posed a threat when he was introduced but this proved too little too late.
One consolation was the very good play of Dale Keepins and he really is
a good prospect.

4th November 2005 MERTHYR RFC 20 Fleur de Lys 15
This was an entertaining and hard fought match at the Wern on a wet Friday
night. Merthyr following their tremendous victory at Narberth stuttered
for much of the game and the tricky backs of the visitors caused problems.
The Ironmen from the start adopted a style of rugby that allowed their
backs free rein, and in hindsight perhaps the better tactic may have been
to use their heavy pack to dominate up front first. However it made for
an exciting game and at half time Merthyr led by a long range penalty
from Out Half Neil Burnett to three to nil. Although the Merthyr pack
held the upper hand they lacked a little patience and too often they came
came back from driving mauls and from scrums when the opton should have
been to drive on.
The visitors had gained in confidence from the first half and after Merthyr
had been just held up short from a driving line out, Fleur did the same
thing but shocked the Merthyr faithful driving over to score from hooker
Mark Davies. Merthyr made a few substitutions and from his first touch
Ross Coombes drove over for a try. Neil Burnett converted and the Ironmen
led 12-5. Merthyr relaxed and straight from the kick off a mistake gifted
the visitors the ball and they needed no second invitation Captain Richard
Jones racing over under the posts and Nathan Gittens converting. The pace
of the game was now frantic and Merthyr's outstanding player Centre Simon
Parry raced away to score a superb individual try. Burnett again converting
and in the closing minutes Burnett slotted a long range kick to make the
score 20-12. Fleur de Lys were not done for however and Gittings slotted
a penalty to close the gap to 5 points and create some tension as Merthyr
held on for an important victory.
In an entertaining game Simon Parry and Gareth Williams were quite outstanding
for Merthyr. Prop Rhys James had his best game for the club and Lloyd
Woods' throwing in was spot on. For the visitors Dewi Jones at Scrum Half
was a real livewire and NO 8 Martin Williams had a big game. The Ironmen
are hitting form at the right time and are currently a handful for any
side .

Narberth 10 MERTHYR RFC 19
This was the performance of the season from the Ironmen and they claimed
a ground record from the West Wales club that goes back a number of seasons.
The conditions were appalling but they were perfectly suited to Merthyr's
giant pack and it was the visiting eight that dominated the game and clinched
a hard fought but well deserved victory. Merthyr dominated the first half
and their driving forward play caused all sorts of problems to the West
Wales side. Jason Price was to the fore in everything and he received
huge support from his other forwards who were marshalled by Dai Cambourne
at scrum half and Neil Burnett at Out Half. In a howling wind and driving
rain Merthyr took the lead on thirteen minutes when a driving maul shunted
the Otters over their line and Gareth Davies got the touchdown. Neil Burnett
made the difficult conversion look easy and the home supporters were shocked
into silence. As the half wore on Merthyr maintained their grip on the
game and Rob Downes and Gethin Thomas made dangerous runs. Jason Price
making one superb tackle in mid field to stop a dangerous attack.
Narberth started the second half in determined fashion and when their
live wire No 8 Lewis Wood broke away he handed on for winger Mark Davies
to score. If they thought that they were going to claw their way back
into the game the Merthyr pack had other ideas and from a driving maul
Dai Cambourne was driven over the line for what should have been a forwards
try. Neil Burnett hit the posts with the conversion and as conditions
improved somewhat Narberth hit back. Their dangerous Scrum Half Adrian
Killa raced away to score to close the gap to 10-12. The Merthyr pack
were not prepared to sit back however and from another driving maul Gethin
Thomas emerged from the middle of the forwards to cross for the score.
Neil Burnett slotted a magnificent conversion and the Ironmen were two
scores clear. In the dying moments Narberth threw everything at the visitors
but the defence of the Ironmen was quite awesome and they deserved the
spolis when the final whistle blew.
This was a tremendous victory , the Otters home ground record goes back
three seasons and they were shocked by the strength of the valleys pack.
In a great team performance Gareth Davies, Gareth Williams and Jason Price
were the pick of an outstanding forward effort. Behind the scrum Dai Cambourne
and Ryan Harries were class scrum halves and Neil Burnett made little
of the conditions to give a fine kicking display. Centres Simon Parry
and Rob Downes were superb defenders and Gethin Thomas had a fine game.

22nd October 2005 Penarth 16 MERTHYR RFC 57
CUP SUCCESS FOR THE IRONMEN by Neil Wilson
Saturday saw the Ironmen make their entry into this years Konica Minolta
Cup and come away from the former Merit Table Side Penarth with an emphatic
victory of 15 – 57. Played in perfect conditions the Ironmen got
off to a slow start conceding an early penalty by Danny Brookman, to be
followed by a try from Robert Sidoli’s cousin, James Crothers converted
by Brookman. 10 -0 down and also conceding 5 penalties in as many minutes,
the Ironmen woke up and young Ryan Harries pounced for a try, followed
by one from Simon Parry and another from Jason Price reveling in wearing
the captains armband once again. Neil Burnett, missing from last weeks
game converted this try and now leading 10-17 the Ironmen started to take
control. Ross Coombes popped up to score Merthyr’s next try which
was followed by a try for Chris Payne for our hosts. The Ironmen hit back
immediately with a fine try down the right wing when Ryan Harries made
a fine break before passing to wing Gethin Thomas who unselfishly slowed
slight of hand to put in full back Andrew Richards for a try converted
by Burnett. This opened the floodgates and four more tries followed from
Mikey Wilson, Gareth Williams, Darren Lynch and a second for Andrew Richards
all converted by Burnett.
An obviously comprehensive victory sets up The Ironmen for next weeks
visit to third placed Narberth which will no doubt be a much sterner test.
What was also pleasing to see was the foresight of the management team
to give debuts to centre Dafydd Hellard and Stephen Klein, both of whom
can be pleased with their performances along with a further start for
young hooker Robert Evans. With Lee Jenkins, Craig Lynch and Ryan Harries
also in the 19 man squad Merthyr had six players of 23 years or younger
and proves that there is talent and development at this end of the Valley.

15th October 2005 MERTHYR RFC 17 Bonymaen 26
Although Merthyr put up a spirited challenge against runaway league leaders
Bonymaen, most at the Wern were disappointed. Merthyr really gave them
a stern test but more than that it was a game that the Ironmen could have
and perhaps should have won. Merthyr missed the kicking ability of Out
Half Neil Burnett who was away for the weekend. His replacement Luke James
had an uncomfortable afternoon with the boot and two conversions and four
penalties were missed. Bonymaen were an impressive unit and some poor
Merthyr tackling conceded the first try. Centre Neil Wilcox breaking through
and Out Half Gareth James converting. Merthyr hit back with a good take
at the lineout and a forward drive that saw Open Side Gareth Davies crashing
over. Bonymaen showed why they lead the table with the next try Open Side
Iuean Hopkins, a real live wire was in support of a break and sent Full
Back James Davies steaming over for the try, Gareth James slotted the
conversion. When Merthyr were penalized at the scrum Gareth James kicked
a 38 meter penalty and established a 5-17 lead for the visitors, and in
the next scrum Merthyr had Mike Wilson sin binned for persistent infringing.
This seemed more than harsh because the Merthyr scrum was dominating the
opposition and the visiting prop found it hard to cope with the pressure
being exerted by the Ironmen. Despite being down to 14 men Merthyr reduced
the lead with a well taken try from Out Half Luke James after some excellent
approach work from Jason Price and Gareth Davies. Half Time came with
Bonymaen leading by 17-10.
It was the Ironmen who began with a bang in the second half. Bursts from
Gethin Thomas and Ryan Harries set up the platform for a forward drive
and Jason Price crossed with Luke James slotting the conversion. Merthyr
threw everything at the visitors but they held firm a tremendous burst
down field featured Gareth Davies and Owain Davies and this earned an
easy penalty. However this went wide and Bonymaen realised that this was
going to be their day. Gareth James slotted a penalty from 48 metres and
Merthyr heads dropped. In the dying moments the visitors then displayed
their class and winger Jason Wride raced over, Gareth James kicking the
conversion.
As the game came to an end Merthyr's woes were compounded when Prop Mike
Wilson was dismissed after a punch on his opposite number and the League
Leaders had continued their fine run. From a Merthyr viewpoint there were
many positives to take from the game. The Merthyr pack destroyed their
opposite numbers and if they had concentrated on the driving maul and
totally played to their strength then I believe they could have achieved
the victory. In the fine pack showing Gareth Williams, Gareth Davies and
Ross Coombes were outstanding; behind Ryan Harries and Gethin Thomas were
the pick. After this performance I believe that Merthyr can look forward
to the challenge of any team within the division and with their pack on
song they need fear no one.

8th October 2005 MERTHYR RFC 34 Llangennach 8
This really was a good Merthyr showing and will be a confidence boost to the
Ironmen. The first twenty minutes saw little from the home side and both
sides made too many errors but as half time approached the Ironmen moved
up a gear and began to take command of the game. Their forwards suddenly
established supremecy and Merthyr began to attack with confidence. A Ross
Coombes drive earned the home side a penalty and Out Half Neil Burnett
slotted the penalty. Then a bout of handling that saw forwards and backs
combine was finished off by Full Back Andrew Richards who threw a dummy
to beat the last man and cross near the posts, Burnett converting. The
second half saw Llangennech get on the score sheet, Out Half Mark Jones
slotted a penalty but by now Merthyr had taken a stranglehold on the game.
A Gareth Williams catch and drive saw replacement hooker Robert Evans
crash over with Burnett converting. It was Neil Burnett himself who increased
the lead with a well struck penalty before Jason Price produced his very
own bit of magic driving over for two late tries. Neil Burnett in superb
form slotted both and Merthyr had established a 34-3 lead. Gareth Beynon
scored a consolation try for the visitors but it was too little too late
and Merthyr had run out 34-8 winners.
In a fine team performance Open Side Flanker Gareth Davies was man of
the match. He plays a Martin Williams role for the Ironmen and the massive
home pack are at their best when he is there to link up play and make
the vital first penalty. Ross Coombes had a huge game as a ball carrier
and always got over the gain line. New Scrum Half Dai Cambourne had an
excellent debut and he will be a great asset in developing the young gem
of a scrum half Ryan Harries. Neil Burnett has given Merthyr a new dimension
this season and his kicking was top class. The Ironmen face the onerous
task of the visit of table topping Bonymaen on Saturday and after this
confidence boost the game could well be a cracker.

1st October 2005 Whitland 33 MERTHYR RFC 7
It was deja vu for Merthyr as they once again headed West for a Division
One encounter, only to
return empty handed.
This match saw Merthyr out-gunned in most departments, and with outside-half
Aled Davies running
the show Whitland made excellant use of a strong wind. The Ironmen found
themselves pinned back for most of the first half as their hosts collected
simple scores through good combined play. After five
minutes they took the lead from well taken line-out ball, hooker Aled Harries
racing over and Davies
adding the conversion. To their credit, Merthyr produced a number of good
forward drives and drove
Whitland back.
There was also some tricky running from Ryan Harries and and Owain Davies,
but Whitland looked
extremely dangerous with ball in hand and after a Davies break, full-back
Lee Glanville crossed. Merthyr
continued to work hard with Jason Price, Ross Coombes and Rhys Miles driving
forward, but the hosts
held out, soaking up the pressure before adding to their tally. Davies sprinted
into space and this time
found Eifion Roberts in support to cross for a converted try. Just before
half time, Whitland killed Merthyr
off with another good line-out take and a forward drive for the line, where
No8 Randall Williams went
over, Davies adding another two points for a 26-0 lead.
Merthyr tried hard to claw their way back into the game using the strong
wind, but the Whitland defence
held firm for 20 minutes. When the Merthyr score came it was the result
of a pushover try attempt which
forced Whitland to infringe, gifting Merthyr a penalty try, Luke Burnett
slotted the conversion. In the
dying minutes a break from defence caught Merthyr flat-footed and Davies
crossed before converting
his own try to round off a virtuoso performance.
This really was a difficult day for the Ironmen where they fought hard up
front and shaded the tight
aspects of the game. However, they found it difficult to compete once the
game became more fluid
and fragmented. Coombes was the outstanding Merthyr player and new centre
Parry looked to
be extremely effective, being strong in the tackle and showing excellant
ball retention skills. Darren
Lynch helped win good line-out ball and Luke James looked tricky with limited
opportunities. Gethin
Thomas, a late replacement produced a spectacular run and his pace was quite
exceptional.
This result leaves the Ironmen in 11th place ahead of this week's home clash
against seventh-
placed Llangennach.
